The Journey of Independent Films from Inception to Distribution
The first step in establishing distribution for an independent film is finding the kernel of a great story that will be picked up by a production company. In other words, you have to MAKE the darn thing before you can sell it.
The job of the producer is to establish the vision of the project, to hire the important people needed to make the movie, to get financing, to make sure everything gets where it should be on time and in one piece, to smooth the feathers of the divas who cannot be kicked, to kick those who can be to meet deadlines, to monitor the post shooting work, and to get distribution for the film. In other words, the producer’s job is to do EVERYTHING and then get the result out in front of the audience (a few prayers for good reviews can also be thrown into the mix).
The production company sells the product and enters into a sales license agreement with a distribution company. They in turn show the film to reps from various theatre groups and hopefully negotiate lease agreements with the buyers. The movies are shown; the audience is finally brought into the picture…literally. There may be a preview for those pesky reviewers before the public gets their chance. The movie makes money or it doesn’t in the theatre, then either makes money or doesn’t on cable or DVD. End of story that might take years to play out.
Let’s see how that works in reality.
Canadian Producer, Eric Gozlan , CEO of Goldrush Entertainment Inc., is juggling two films right now…the already previewed and critically acclaimed drama ” Beautiful Boy”, and the soon to be released thriller “Carjacked”. “Beautiful Boy” hit the mark with an excellent and intense script brought to life by two of the most versatile actors in the industry, Michael Sheen and Maria Bello, with Maria Bello also signing on to star in a second film with Goldrush Entertainment, “Carjacked”.
With some visionary input, financing know-how, and an experienced hand, Eric Gozlan and his company Goldrush Entertainment brought the two films to life.
“Beautiful Boy” was previewed in Toronto and at the Dallas Film Festival to rave reviews. The movie scooped some envious awards along the way from the Toronto International Film Festival, The San Sebastian Film Festival, and the Tokyo International Film Festival,
Anchor Bay Entertainment, one of the leading distribution companies for independent films, picked up both “Beautiful Boy and CarJacked”. Eric Gozlan and his Montreal based production company, took hold of the kernel, made two excellent films, and saw both of them put in the hands of a distribution company.
Onto the next project…and the circle continues.
